It was a beautiful day out, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the passengers of the S.S. Turn Over, the only ferry to the infamous Rai Island, were merrily mingling about with each other as they passed the time until they docked at their destination.
It was obvious that today couldn't have been a more perfect day to happily sail off to a new home and a new adventure on Rai Island!
And yet, all a 16 year old Cecilia Shiel could do was nervously tap her foot against the deck of the ship as she leaned over the rail, her violet eyes not really registering the breathtaking sight of her new island home before her as her mind raced a mile a minute.
It had been a struggle, to say the least, to get them on that boat and on their way to Rai Island. Her parents, or rather her mother, was completely against the idea. Hated it in fact if Celi were being completely honest, and no doubt her mother used every trick in the book and then some to try and keep both her and her sister locked up wherever in the world they happened to be settle down so they couldn't get away from her. Her father, on the other hand, couldn't have cared less what happened to them so long as they didn't cost him his time or money.
But it took 4 years, 4 long years of Celi calling in every lawyer that wasn't in her parents back pocket, every child care system or government worker, anyone and anything she could think of to try to set them both free. 4 long years of nothing but hard work on top of her expected "exemplary" studies and extracurriculars, and finally, finally, she had done it!
As of 1 week, 3 days, and 34 minutes ago, Celi was now officially emancipated from their parents, and her little sister was now legally her ward.
Of course, Celi didn't do it all by herself and would be forever grateful to the lawyers who stuck by her and her sister's case for so long. It was no easy feat getting enough backing and evidence to prove to a court that she should be allowed to emancipate from her high class and well known parents due to mental and child abuse, and child neglect. And on top of that, also have her younger sister legally come under her care for the same reasons, all while she had only just turned 16 years old.
Honestly, there were times when she worried all her hard work would have been all for not.
But now, now she had nothing to worry about. She and Mimi were finally free, they had a new home waiting for them, new schools where they could make friends, and she'd finally be able to pursue her dream job as a fashion designer while supporting Mimi with whatever she wanted to do.
Life was turning around for her and she should be nothing but smiles and rainbows right now, she knew this, she really did, but Celi just couldn't get over her anxiousness. She'd been running a nonstop, high speed, high stakes rat race since she was 12! She's had to go over more legal documents, statements, clarifications, clauses, and signatures than she could shake a pen at well BEFORE her not so sweet 16 and now it was just...over.
Nothing more to sign, no more lawyers to talk to, no more of their parents ever again.
She honestly didn't know what to do with herself now.
Her sister had told her earlier that she was wound too tight from it all and should just relax, and yea, she probably was and probably should. But could you blame her? She knew she still had things to do! Teachers to talk to, housing papers to go over, just plain moving in general to deal with, and then getting started on her work again so they'd have an income! She didn't have time to relax just yet!
She couldn't relax just yet, not now anyway!
But with the island only a few scant minutes away, Celi looked back at her sister, happily chatting away with the ferryman over who knows what and without a care in the world as they started pulling into the docks, and took a long deep breath.
Everything was fine, she was fine. They were free and they could take it easy now, they had a whole new life ahead of them afterall.
With one last deep breath, Celi allowed herself to finally relax a little and smile.
"Everything will be fine, it's the start of a new life and it'll be great"
